New Zealand’s oldest penitentiary, located in the beautiful Art Deco city of Napier, sits on Napier’s Bluff Hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean and beautiful Centennial Gardens. We offer self-guided audio tours, large group guided tours, DeadHill terrifying private booking night tours and the home of Hawkes Bays original Escape Rooms!!
Our main walls exterior has hand-carved blocks by the inmates in 1906. Our historic story covers the incarceration of murderers, drug barons, gangs and official death sentence hangings. View the old quarry where the inmates used to work their hard days’ labour to build the walls that would keep them imprisoned. See the path of the 1931 earthquake that struck Napier and changed the shape of our buildings and the lands of Hawkes Bay.
Walk the hallways and sit in the cells where inmates where housed from 1862 – 1993.
