1. Leven Canyon Reserve

Excursion/incursion icon of school getaways website.Leven Canyon Road, Nietta

This spectacular canyon reserve of 2,500 hectares is great for a half-day or full day activities for couples, families or a school excursion. It is located a leisurely 50 minute drive from Devonport through beautiful farmland. With well-developed trails, two lookouts, barbecue areas and toilets – it’s easy to see why Leven canyon is one of Parks 60 Great Short Tassie walks.

Leven Canyon main lookout - the Eagles view.

Walking Options

There are four walk options ranging from easy to moderate difficulty and from 20 minutes to three hours return. The trails have a well maintained surface and cleanly cut steps in the steeper areas. Just wear some comfortable shoes.  Leave the high heels in the car ok !

CRUICKSHANKS LOOKOUT   – An easy walk to get the best views and takes around 20 minutes return. This will be longer with little people who may need to be carried some of the way but easy for those with longer legs (3 years of age and older).  Maye bribe them with a treat at the end.

EDGE LOOKOUT  – A walk of moderate difficulty takes you downhill to the Edge Lookout and is 30 minutes return. Those with little legs may need some help on the return journey!

CIRCUIT WALK –  You can extend your walk through the side trail that is aptly named, Forest Stairs. The trail runs through a steep gully covered in Ferns and connects the trails of both Lookout walks. This option takes 40 minutes return and is well worth the extra time.

Fern steps track. Small foot bridge crossing a creek in the gully.

CANYON FLOOR to Devils Elbow – To get there you leave the Reserve car park and turn right at Loongana Road. It is only about 1km to the Canyon Floor area.  If you incorporate this walk with a visit to the Reserve and lookouts, definitely plan for a full day. Pack a jacket for bad weather as it can change in the canyon quickly. In fact Tassie is renowned for four season in one day so always be prepared.

Kayaking is poplar in the canyon and the terrain is quite spectacular as you can see from the video below.

The ‘Bluff’ incorporates a BBQ area, skate park, toilets, Showers a Surf Club, Drift Cafe and Mrs Jones Restaurant. Look out for Mr Whippy. “Always bad music but great ice-cream!”

There is a fenced playground that is great for little kids with swings, climbing net, slides and other equipment. It is accessible to all, with wheelchair access for activities.

If the barbecue area is busy you can find a great spot to sit and eat in front of the surf club overlooking the beach. Drift Café will be able to serve you some fish and chips to eat on the lawn.

From here – look left and right. Either way you go will be a great walk along the river front.
